West Bengal is a state in the eastern region of India and is the nation's fourth-most populous state, with over 91 million inhabitants. West Bengal is the thirteenth-largest Indian state by area, and is divided into 23 districts. West Bengal includes the Darjeeling Himalayan hill region, the Ganges delta, the Rarh region, and the coastal Sundarbans. The main ethnic group are the Bengalis, with Bengali Hindus forming the demographic majority.
Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, is the second-largest commercial city in India. As of 2011, the state had a per capita income of ₹1,006 ($14), the third-highest in India. Its gross state domestic product (GSDP) was ₹5.03 trillion ($70 billion) in FY 2020–21. The state has a human development index of 0.863, the highest of any Indian state.
The primary tourist destinations in the state are Darjeeling, Sundarbans, Dooars, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Siliguri and Gangtok. West Bengal is an attractive tourist destination all year round. The state has a diverse landscape – from the snow-capped Himalayan peaks in the north, to the tropical Sundarbans mangrove forests in the south. There are also many historical and religious sites, as well as some of India's best tea plantations.
In recent years, the state government has been working to promote tourism in West Bengal. The West Bengal Tourism Department has launched several initiatives, including the "Bengal Circuit" project, which aims to develop tourism infrastructure and promote cultural and heritage tourism in the state. The department has also created a number of "theme-based" tourist circuits, such as the Bengal Buddhist Circuit, the Tea Tourist Circuit, and the Sunderbans Tiger Trail.
